Over 70 years ago, the legend of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Parker enthralled America and world and in fashion history, it created a revival through the filming of their story by Arthur Penn starring Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty. As a result of this movie, 1970s designers and fashion were fascinated and inspired by the 30s look and combine this with the fascination with knit wear during this period and viola, you have this elegant Nina Ricci 3 piece fashion statement.
This is a 1970s, 100% laine wool ensemble created by Ricci under the Week End label. Albeit this look is more Bugsby Berkely / Norma Desmond than the dust bowl fashion designed by Ralph Lauren for Dunaway. The ensemble features a drop pleat skirt and asymmetric sweater in purple and taupe and a voluminous cocoon coat with deep butterfly cut sleeves. When worn alone, the sweater and skirt, have a very clean look that was inspired by the look of Coco Chanel in the 30s. The coat with its geometric detailing hints towards more of the influence of Madame Voinnet or perhaps, the U.S. designer, Adrian.
All of the pieces are in very good condition. Measurements are: Skirt - 15 inches across waist, across hips - 21 inches and total length of 26.75 inches, Sweater - due to drop shoulders is accommodating for shoulder up to 19 inches, 13 to 15 inches across waist and 22 inch sleeves, Jacket - roomy, one size fits all cut.
