A vintage miniature bead necklace from the region of Magara (Congo). The necklace is 39 inches long and was worn at weddings. The number of strands indicated wealth. Historically, the beads were used as money during the slave trade and were brought to the continent by the Arabians. This necklace has 36 strands.
This necklace was a part of a collection of a Swiss diplomat that was amassed over a 40 year period during his tenure in Africa from circa 1930 to 1970.
