Vintage 1950s French Haute Couture Fashion in Style of Elsa Schaperelli

vintage item::

A rare and exceptional example of vintage 1950s French haute couture fashion design; a matching coat and skirt. The design is quite daring for the 50s and includes elements that remind one of a harlequin with the oversized question mark shape lapels that can interlock to form a stylized flower. This flower is repeated at back of coat and bottom of skirt. The interlocking lapels are not only decorative but also protect the wearer from the cold wind. The coat is outlined in dark blue stitching which also sleekly conceals the two side pockets. The design was created with a sense of humor and whimsy that hints at the influence of the great madcap of late 40s and 50s fashion, Elsa Schaperelli. Even the stylized buttons are hand-painted. There is no label in either the coat or skirt. Both are entirely hand-sewn from A to Z.

The ensemble comes from the original owner's estate who adored clothing and fashion. Her wardrobe contained fashions from the great houses; Dior, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent and clothing created by her personal tailor after designs from Paris and Italy. The coat and skirt are made of a thick golden yellow and are both lined. This ensemble is from the 1950s and was previously stored in special protective papers and in special trunks along with her other fashions. Hence, both pieces are in impeccable condition.
