This "Tree Stump" mould blown studio glass vase is from Iittala and was designed by Tapio Wirkkala. The 10.2 inch tall vase is officially called "Kalvolan Kanto" and was produced from 1948 to 1972. This particular example is from the 40's. It is signed, "Tapio Wirkkala 3241". There are some light scratches underneath base, otherwise, it is in very good condition.
Tapio Wirkkala is one of the pioneers of Finnish industrial art and design. He gained international fame as a result of his broad aesthetic scope. His range included studio art glass, mass-produced everyday objects, banknotes, sculptural wooden furniture and objects. He was at home working with industrial and natural materials. He felt that he honored the material that he was working with while applying them for use in the contemporary world.
"All materials have their own unwritten laws. This is forgotten far too often. You should never be violent with a material you're working on, and the designer should aim at being in harmony with his material." (Wirkkala)
