A fine example of early 50's Swiss design. The stool was designed by the Swiss designer, Jakob Mueller and was sold at the store Wohnhilfe. Measurements are: 17.75 x 16.5 x 12.5 inches. It is in good condition with patina. This is an early 1950s version in a darker hued wood compared to the later lighter wood production series.
This design is particularly interesting as there is cultural and philosophical meaning behind its origin. It was a part of a carpentry collective's effort to help themselves recover in post war Switzerland and Europe after World War II in 1945. This idea flourished into the Wohnhilfe store which still exists today in Zurich. This design is very important in Swiss design history and evolution as it shows one of the first intellectual and artistic efforts to incorporate the new look of furniture with traditional Swiss furniture forms.
Wohnhilfe was founded by a group of master carpenters in post war (1945) Switzerland as a means to help build their businesses. The idea was to design and build simple yet modern furniture that the average man could afford. The result was an incredible line of furniture that had clean lines and "user friendly" forms that could introduce new furniture design to Switzerland. The idea was to create furniture that people could easily integrate with other existing furniture, to create practical furniture and to create the best quality, hand-crafted furniture. Designers included Jacob Müller, Max Bill, Willy Guhl, Wilhelm Kienzle und Urs Roesch.
