A Rene Maurel French mid-century modern studio pottery bowl. A fine example of French 50's ceramics, this bowl is decorated using the Sgraffito technique featuring abstract figures that are dancing around the outer surface. The bowl is 5.5 inches tall and 7 inches in diameter and chips underneath base which are not visible when the bowl is exhibited.
Rene Maurel was a trained painter who became a ceramicist of extraordinary talent. He trained with Louis Giraud before setting up his own atelier in 1955 and started to create pottery that was known for unusual glazes and decorations. He was awarded a special prize for faience at the Vallauris Biennale of 1966. Francois Raty also trained under his tutelage.
