A rare example of a 1960s, icon vintage fashion item. In 1966 Paco Rabanne produced "Do it Yourself" Mod Rhodoid Plastic Disc Dress "Suitcase" Kit. The idea was that one could design whatever one wanted to with the kit which included all the material and tools needed to do so. "I defy anyone to design a hat, coat or dress that hasn't been done before". The idea was quite revolutionary at the time.
In 1970, Rabanne produced this "fabric" for the Swiss textile company, Baumann AG. This fabric was a variation of the kit fabric, except with 1 inch squares and the instead of loops, another industrial flat closure was used to connect the squares. This dress is from the fabric produced by the Swiss company Baumann. The designer of this dress was inspired by Art Deco flapper dresses complete with drop fringe skirt and added fringe at the shoulders. The dress is in very, very good condition. Measurements are: total length: 42.5 inches, across chest: 17.5 inches, across hips: 20 inches and across waist: 17 inches. The beauty of such a dress is that one could also take out pieces to adapt it to fit your body or to completely redesign another fashion item, i.e. one could make a mini dress and use the rest to make a hat or purse.
