A rare pair of tri-color studio glass vases designed by Tapio Wirkkala for Rosenthal. The cogwheel shaped vases were produced in 1963 inches and measure 9.5 inches with a diameter of 6 inches and 6.5 inches tall with a diameter of 3.75 inches, respectively. The vases have some light marks underneath bases, otherwise, they are in very good condition.
Tapio Wirkkala is one of the pioneers of Finnish industrial art and design. He gained international fame as a result of his broad aesthetic scope. His range included studio art glass, mass-produced everyday objects, banknotes, sculptural wooden furniture and objects. He was at home working with industrial and natural materials. He felt that he honored the material that he was working with while applying them for use in the contemporary world.
"All materials have their own unwritten laws. This is forgotten far too often. You should never be violent with a material you're working on, and the designer should aim at being in harmony with his material." (Wirkkala)
