An original German Expressionist etching from one of the most famous artists of the Weimar era, Franz Maria Jansen. The etching meaures 7.75 x 8.75 and 14.25 x 19.75 inch including the matting and framing. The print is of distant view of a industrial city. The subject of peasant farmers working in the field with a town in the distance is particularly interesting for this is a subtle reference to the artist's political and social views of critiquing the industrial society. The etching is from the 20s, number 2 from an edition of 2 and is signed. It was printed by the esteemed Munich printshop of Heinrich Wetteroth.

Artist: Franz Maria Jansen (1885-1958) is one of the most famous artists of the Weimar era. His works are in major museum collections the world over, including MOMA and LACMA. The early period of his career was greatly infleuenced by his anti Nazi political views, as well as, his goal to address the issues of social and political injustices and inequalities. He was a member of the original group that formed the Cologne and Berlin Secessions. Due to his political activity and especially due to his active involvement with the German expressionist art movement, his is considered to be degenerate art, along with the work of Willi Baumeister, Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, Max Ernst, among others.

Printer: Heinrich Wettenroth was one of the most important art print shops in Munich and for the Expressionism art movement. In addition to Jansen, the artist August Macke, Paul Klee, Max Beckman, Wilhelm Leibl, Adolf Schinnerer, Ernst von Dombrowski and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner entrusted their works to him.
