An exceptionally rare wooden bowl designed by the Swiss toy maker, Kurt Naef. Before Kurt Naef started to design toys, he and his wife (Lis) owned a store in Basel Switzerland. They sold some design and in 1952, Naef formed a partnership with the Swiss carpenter, Walter Schonbücher, to make Naef's designs for household / table items in the modern, mid-century style.
This bowl was sold by Naef as a cheese / Hors d'oeuvre serving plate. The bowl was lathe turned by Schonbücher and measures 15.75 inches / 40 cm in diameter. The bowl can be used on both sides. On one side, it is a sleek plate with a carved crater of a bowl and the other side, there is a raised plateau in the middle. There is some patina to the bowl edge of the plateau (light abrasion), otherwise, it is in very good condition. This is an exceptional, very rare early piece of Swiss design history and circa 1952. There is a copy of the original Naef documentation at the bottom of the photos.
