A perfect example of French 50's pottery, Ecole de Nancy. The pottery set features a 9 inch pitcher and 6 cups (4.75 inches). The set is completely hand-thrown and has a certain rough hewn "feel" which is perfectly contrasted with the high glaze, richly colored interiors. The service is signed Mougin, an important ceramic studio which was started by Joseph Mougin in 1867. All the pieces are in very good condition.
The Mougin atelier's history began in 1867 with the trained sculptors, Jospeph Mougin and Charles Lemarquier, as founders. After several mis-fires, the atelier found success with the assistance of Victor Prouve (father of John Prouve) and exhibited at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900. Mougin then went to study at the Sevres porcelain studios to refine his techniques. The Mougin atelier was moved to Nancy in 1905. It collaborated with major French artists, including Louis Majorelle, Pierre Roche and Ernst Wittman and executed many of their works. Joseph went on to win first prize in ceramics at the Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris (1925). In the 30's, his children, Odile and Francois, began assisting their father. They succeeded their father after his retirement in 1950.
