A pair of Swiss mid-century modern 1950's design chairs by Hans Bellman. This is a rare pair of lounge chair height, fabric covered, chairs produced by the Swiss firm, Horgen Glarus, circa 1955. The chairs' unique design is distinguished by the angular wood components separated by a fine slit of space which is further enhanced by the splayed chrome legs. This particular version is quite rare as the low height is perfect for the living room as opposed to the desk / dining chair models. The chairs' overall height is 29 inches, seat height is 15.25 inches and total width of 16 inches. One chair has a tear at front and stain in fabric.
Hans Bellman was a Bauhaus trained Swiss architect and designer. He produced furniture for various international companies, including Strassle and Knoll.
Hans Bellmann (1911-1990) studied from 191 to 1933 at the Bauhaus in Dessau. After which, he worked in the architecture offices of Mies van de Rohe. He returned to Switzerland in 1934 where he began to work as an independent architect and industrial designer. His designs are known for their ergonomic forms and economic use of material involving clear lines and free and simple forms. He taught at the School of Applied Arts (Kunstgewerbeschule) in Zurich, with Max Bill at the School of Design in Ulm and as a guest critic at Harvard.
