Hans Bellman - Rare 1950s Armchair

share this

designer :: Bellman, Hans

vintage item::

A very rare design by the Bauhaus trained, Swiss architect and furniture designer, Hans Bellman.  The chair's seat is molded, laminated wood and the slightly angled halves appear not to touch but for two small chrome joiners. Hence, a design is created that has an angular, architectural and streamlined appearance. This is a very rare version of this Bellman design as it has armrests and a slightly different base than the side chair design. It was produced by Horgen Glarus; most likely as a special request or in a very, very limited edition. The total height is  31.5 inches tall with a seat height of 18 inches and total width of 26 inches. The condition is very good with very light patina to wood.

Hans Bellman designed furniture for several international companies, including Strässle and Knoll.

about the designer :: Bellman, Hans

Hans Bellmann (1911-1990) studied from 191 to 1933 at the Bauhaus in Dessau. After which, he worked in the architecture offices of Mies van de Rohe. He returned to Switzerland in 1934 where he began to work as an independent architect and industrial designer. He taught at the School of Applied Arts (Kunstgewerbeschule) in Zurich, with Max Bill at the School of Design in Ulm and as a guest critic at Harvard.
