A 1920's French, art deco era studio pottery vase by Paul Bonifas. The vase's simple, modernist form has a dark green, almost black lava glaze. It is 8 inches tall, 6 inches in diameter and in very good condition.
Paul Bonifas was a master ceramicist. He was born in 1893 in Geneva Switzerland; his first atelier was located nearby in Versiox. In 1921, he went to Paris and joined the arts journal, The New Spirit, started by Amédéé Ozenfant and his landsman, Le Corbusier. During his stay in Paris, he opened his own atelier and produced distinct, very modern forms with a sculptural quality. He often used soft pastel colored, craquleé glazes or his signature black glaze. His black pottery is considered to be a perfect harmony of form and glaze. His fame expanded pass the borders of France after his exhibitions at the Autumn Salon from 1927 and the Art Deco Salons of 1931 as well as the Schweizerwerkbund / Swiss Decorative Arts Guild Exhibitions. Due to political circumstances, he migrated to the U.S. where he joined the Fine Arts Department of Washington University.
