A 1920s, Bauhaus era children's architecture toy building set. The set consists of 4 distinct, geometrical shapes. The pure, clean, forms are reminiscent of the sets by Wassily Kandinsky and the chess pieces designed by Josef Hartwig.
Children's building sets have been around since the 17th century, however, this set challenges the traditional idea of children's toys through the principle that less is more. This set perfectly exemplifies not only the Bauhaus mantra of "form = function" but also but frees the child's or adult's imagination to create concrete or imaginary structures based on his or her own inspirations. This type of toy had a profound influence on 20th century toy design as one can see in the designs of Kurt Naef and contemporary Japanese toy design.
For size ref. the square is 1 inch tall. There is light patina from play and the box is missing its lid. There is an original label from an Austrian toy store underneath.
