vintage item::

Antonio Vitalli vintage wooden toy. A fascinating creation of a ruffled mother hen whereby the chicks can hide underneath her for protection. For size ref., the mother is 5.75 inches tall and the ducklings are 1.75 inches tall. The use of the grained wood to perfectly enhance this biomorphic design reminds one of the work of Tapio Wirkkala. Antonio Vitalli was a Swiss toy designer, creating hand carved toys in his Zurich based atelier.

about the designer :: Vitali, Antonio

Antonio Vitali was an Italian / Swiss toy designer and producer. He was known for his hand-carved often abstract toys, dolls and riding figures created in his Zurich atelier. His artistry and talent achieved international fame after he formed a partnership with the U.S. toymaker, Creative Playthings in 1954. Although adults found his toys not realistic enough, he observed that children were completely enthralled and fascinated by his creations. His abstract figures challenged children's imagination.

"Good Educational toys stimulate the child towards creative play. In play, the child immerses itself in a dream-world created by its own fantasy. In play, the child makes its experiences and stimulates its thoughts to help it understand what happens in its environment. The child lives first in an emotional world, with its desires, delights, and dislikes. There are two types of thinking: the creative imaginary and the observing logical. Both are stimulated in child's play. Good toys have to contain the possibility for the child to develop emotionally and intellectually." Antonio Vitali
