An Andre Baud studio pottery bowl. The bowl is 4.25 inches tall and 15.25 inches wide. The elliptical form is covered in a white glaze on the outer surface and the interior has an exemplary Baud decor: an abstract star motive on a dark blue background. It is signed. There are some abrasions to the glaze at the edge, a 0.25 inch repair. Otherwise, it is in good condition.
Andre Baud (1903-1986) was a French ceramicist and was one of the first potters to settle in Vallauris, circa 1942. His work is known for its simple shape, sobriety and intense use of color. He was one of the earlier promoters of Vallauris pottery, along with Suzanne Ramie. As early as 1946, he and Ramie organized exhibitions of pottery from this region.
