A vintage 1950's Italian studio pottery vase from Marcello Fantoni. The vase has an abstract bird shape with long, slender neck that flows into a bulbous body. The body is painted with a brilliant colored abstract glaze. The bird form is perfected by the addition of a beak and two small "eyes". It is 11 inches tall and 4.25 inches in diameter. It has a flea bite at lip, otherwise, it is in very good condition.
Marcello Fantoni studied under Carlo Guerrini and the sculptor, Bruno Innocenti. He opened his own studio in the 1930’s where he started to build his reputation for creating whimsical forms with very artistic, often fantastical, decorations. His works are included in the collections of MOMA (NY, Tokyo), MFA (Boston) and the V & A (London).
