A 1920s, Bauhaus period design, Swiss ceiling lamp. The lamp is quite rare as it is quite long at 46 inches (including shade), hence, it is perfect for lofts, apartments or homes with high ceiling. Its pure architectural design is the perfect example of the Bauhaus design mantra, form = function. There is also a special design element at the ceiling cover which allows the lamp to automatically correct itself and hang perfectly straight, even when the ceiling is slanted.
The lamp was produced by the Swiss lighting manufacturer B.A.G. The company, along with Belmag, was one of the leading producers of lighting during this period and worked closely with Swiss architects, like Sigfried Gideon and Hin Bredendieck, in incorporating industrial design and Bauhaus inspired architecture lines to create lamps that were functional and clearly modern.
The lamp is actually a wisp of a lamp as it appears to be delicately balanced and fragile but is quite robust and a perfect piece of modernism design. The lamp has some patina but it is in general very good condition and most importantly, the shade is free of indentations.
A Swiss company that is one of the premier producers of industrial and decorative lighting. It is especially noted for its Bauhaus, and mid-century modern era designs. The lamps were sold at many stores including the famed Wohnbedarf store, which introduced modern Bauhaus design to the Swiss public.
